Pleated polyester-cotton coat, from ISSEY MIYAKE, Spring/Summer 1990, the mainline runway collection. The lapels are wide and notched, and open across the chest. The front closes with three aluminum buttons. There are three patch pockets, one at the chest and two at the hip. Contrast topstitching in tan runs along the pocket edges, the cuffs, the hem and the yoke seam that crosses the body above the chest. The back is vented at the center hem. The sleeves are cut as a continuous arc off the yoke, and their pleats radiate around that curve rather than running vertically as they do on the body. Laid flat the garment forms a dome. Worn, the arc collapses into volume through the shoulder and upper arm.

The coat dates to Miyake's second year of pleating. The first pleated pieces were shown for Spring/Summer 1989, and the technique was developed inside the mainline collections for several seasons afterward. It predates PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE, established as a separate line in 1993.
