Pleated polyester-cotton skirt, from ISSEY MIYAKE, Spring/Summer 1990, the mainline runway collection. The waistband is elasticated and the fullness is gathered into it. The pleats run vertically the whole length and open into a wide sweep at the hem. Contrast topstitching in tan crosses the body in horizontal bands and runs along the waistband seam and the hem, matching the stitching on the coat. It is made in the same polyester-cotton as the coat and in the same grey.

The skirt dates to Miyake's second year of pleating. The first pleated pieces were shown for Spring/Summer 1989, and the technique was developed inside the mainline collections for several seasons afterward. It predates PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE, established as a separate line in 1993.
