Floor-length pleated polyester skirt, from ISSEY MIYAKE, Autumn/Winter 1990-91, the mainline runway collection. The waistband is elasticated. The front falls in straight vertical pleats. The back is a single panel that widens as it descends, cut with a V at the waist that sets its pleats on a diagonal; laid flat, its lower corners fold back to the center. Worn, the panel opens and those corners extend to either side, projecting away from the body at the hem.

The skirt dates back to Miyake's second year of pleating. The first pleated pieces were shown for Spring/Summer 1989, and the technique was developed inside the mainline collections for several seasons afterward. It predates PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE, established as a separate line in 1993.
